Norwegian-Russian Workshop on development and use of oil spill sensitivity/vulnerability maps for coastal and marine areas

The Norwegian Polar Institute and Murmansk Marine Biological Institute would like to invite you to participate in the Norwegian-Russian workshop on oil spill sensitivity/vulnerability maps for coastal and marine areas.

The two-day workshop will be held on October 5–7 2015 in Svanhovd, Norway. The working language of the workshop is English.

Participants of the Workshop include representatives of companies, engaged in the oil spill response (OSR) operations at sea; experts in development of oil spill sensitivity/vulnerability maps; representatives of regional and national legislative and executive authorities of Russia and Norway, responsible for environmental protection activities; and members of non-governmental environmental organizations.

The workshop aims to:
  • discuss existing (primarily Russian and Norwegian) methods of sensitivity/vulnerability mapping
  • evaluate available oil spill sensitivity/vulnerability maps for coastal and marine areas and relevance of such maps for protection of the Arctic marine environment
  • discuss use of sensitivity/vulnerability maps in oil spills response plans and actual response operations as well as in sustainable environmental management
  • develop joint recommendations for improving methods of oil spill sensitivity/vulnerability mapping and application of the maps in OSR operations in the Arctic, including necessary legislative regulatory requirements.

Background materials on existing methods of sensitivity/vulnerability mapping can be found on the website of the Oil Spill Response Competence Center in the Arctic (http://osr-arctic.ru/ru/matrica-kompetencii-resursy/karty-ekologicheskoy-chuvstvitelnosti ) by Murmanshelf Association of Contractors and at the forum for sensitivity maps (http://forum.osr-arctic.ru/index.php ).
Abstracts will be collected and published before the workshop and will be sent out to all the participants along with the preliminary proposals for the workshop resolution.
Please let us know at your earliest convenience whether you are able to participate in the workshop, what questions (in addition to mentioned above) you would like to discuss, and whether you would like to present your opinion (as a short presentation) on improvement of mapping methods and use of such maps. We hope for your participation and kindly ask you to inform us about your decision by August 15.
