Summary and concluding remarks about the ecosystem management BarentsPortal - a comprehensive description and evaluation of the environmental status of the Barents Sea ecosystem, including human activities and impact in the area, using relevant scientific and monitoring knowledge from Norwegian, Russian and other sources. The status comprise climate change, fishery activities, marine pollution, oil and gas activity, shipping, marine resource management, and environmental management. Further more, a detail and updated description and analyse of marin biology and ecology, including red list species, biodiversity, end the main species groups as whales, seals, polar bear, whalerus, phytoplankton and zooplankton as copepods as calanus species, bottom communities, marine bacteria, fish fauna as the key species capelin, northeast atlantic cod and atlantic herring. In addition there are a detail description of environmental factors as sea ice, hydrographical factors as temperature and salinity and current mainly drives by the Gulf Stream or north atlantic drift. The report is sponsored by the russian-norwegian commission on environmental protection and the norwegian-russian fishery commission, ministry of environment and Ministry of natural resources and ecology in the russian federation. http://www.barentsportal.com/barentsportal09/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=90&layout=blog&Itemid=287&lang=en Wed, 22 May 2013 02:13:10 +0000 Joomla! 1.5 - Open Source Content Management en-gb Summary and concluding remarks about ecosystem based management (Introduction) http://www.barentsportal.com/barentsportal09/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=507%3Asummary-and-concluding-remarks-about-ecosystem-based-management-introduction&catid=90%3Asummary-and-concluding-remarks-about-ecosystem&Itemid=287&lang=en http://www.barentsportal.com/barentsportal09/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=507%3Asummary-and-concluding-remarks-about-ecosystem-based-management-introduction&catid=90%3Asummary-and-concluding-remarks-about-ecosystem&Itemid=287&lang=en Issues of importance for ecosystem based management. The second part focuses on how different themes may interact with each other. The aim of this is to illustrate how broad and holistic assessments that underlies ecosystem based management may pave the way for improvements in management. Concluding remarks are given in the third part. ]]> admin@barentsportal.com (P. Arneberg (NPI), O. Korneev (SMG), O. Titov (PINRO) and J. E. For example, if ocean acidification causes deteriorations of the food base of fish stocks, this can worsen the effect that any overfishing may have on these stocks. Similarly, if both acidification and bottom trawling affect benthic communities, their effects may add on or even amplify each other. A number of other interactions are possible. For example, if acidification, bottom trawling and overfishing should have a combined negative impact on food sources of seabirds and marine mammals in the future, accidental oil spills may get more serious impacts on already stressed populations of birds and mammals.

  • Instances where impact of human activities on the ecosystem has been demonstrated or is likely
  • Instances where there is a risk for such impact from future activities
  • Instances where there is no significant impact in the ecosystem but it has been shown or might be expected that the situation deviates from goals that we can expect that an ecosystem based management plan will have

Examples of such goals are listed in the introduction of this chapter.
